Working with migrant workers' children in Beijing's rural outskirts
In 2009, Helen Gao '11 reached out to Shuren migrant workers' primary school in Shijingshan District on the outskirts of Beijing. That summer, Helen led a group of Yale students studying Chinese to the school where they taught English and science classes for two weeks.
In the spring of 2010, Michael Zhan '12 and Rachel Wang '12 went back to the school for the Yale Reach Out trip. With 15 Yale students and 15 Yali Middle School students from Hunan Province, the group taught and inspired more than 10 classrooms of primary school students, of varying grades.
